For the anon who asked (and for anybody who might be interested), I have a list of my favourite Kurt/Blaine fics under the cut. Each link is accompanied by an excerpt and a tiny blurb on why I liked the overall story, just to give you a bit more than a title to go on. Hope you enjoy! ♥

1 alternate universe

canon-compliant
In a nutshell: fics that don’t veer too far from the canon timeline!

if there’s hellfire, he’s totally down with that by villagestories
“We both know how this scenario plays out, Kurt. You come up with something completely nonsensical, I try to bring some logic to the table, you deflect by drowning me with compliments, I end up caving in, you act smug, and then the whole thing ends with me feeling like the world’s most spineless boyfriend.”

While the idea of taking the Seven Deadly Sins and applying them to various Kurt/Blaine vignettes sounds kind of heavy, this is actually one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever read. I laughed out loud too many times to count. Both boys are written with a delightful amount of sweetness, humour, and typical teenage exasperation, and the cameos by the rest of the kids are so much fun.

than the sum of its parts by flaming_muse
He scans the room for a frantic moment before he finds Kurt’s familiar face - and he should have realized he had feelings ages ago, because the flip of his stomach when he sees Kurt’s smile is anything but new.

Quite the epic — 30k+, to be exact! I mentally refer to it as the hole-filling fic, because it picks up the day after their first kiss and ends during the summer before season three, exploring a lot of the quieter spaces the show didn’t get to capture. By “quieter” I mostly mean snatches of intimate, domestic things that naturally happen when you’re in a relationship, but aren’t really grand enough to be called milestones. Think of the “Because of the layers?” scene in 3x05, but, like, times a thousand. There’s also a wonderful companion piece from Kurt’s point of view.

thank you for being a friend by sotto_voice
“Oh my God, what are you, gay Buddha? Do you think if you sit there and,” she makes a complicated, attitude-filled hand gesture at him, “zen at me long enough, I’m going to give up all my secrets?”

A Kurt/Blaine/Santana friendship is all I want for Christmas, so this fic was bound to score some points with me by default, but the author took it several steps further by making it genuinely powerful. I would say the tone is predominately light and comedic (when you’re dealing with Santana and her one-liners, that’s kind of inevitable, and trust me, she has some killers here; her voice is spot-on), but that doesn’t at all subtract from its poignancy. It should be noted that this takes place during the summer and was written long before season three even started filming, so while there are undertones of Brittany/Santana, the two aren’t girlfriends who are decidedly dating — which is canon-compliant for the time, but still, just a heads-up.

that was then, he is now by villagestories
Blaine’s making him look bad but thankfully, no one seems to notice. Finn’s taking dating tips from his step-brother’s boyfriend and he’s equal parts embarrassed and grateful.

This was published mid-S2, which means there are inevitably some things that don’t match up with canon (e.g. when and why Kurt transfers back to McKinley, Blaine transferring to McKinley the same school year, Finn’s relationship status, how prom goes down) but the discrepancies aren’t so glaring that they’ll throw you out of the story. I basically want to shove this fic at anti-Blaine people who say he’s ruined S1!Kurt or somehow robbed him of his identity, because it’s a really beautiful depiction of how, yes, Blaine has undeniably changed Kurt, but only for the better. Told through the varied perspectives of Finn, Puck, Burt, and Blaine himself.

when you find your way back down by robotsfighting
Kurt swept his eyes over Blaine. He was a wreck; his coat was still on, buttons done and undone, his hair puffy and stiff over his scalp, his eyes glassy and staring. But he saw Kurt looking at him, and he smiled, warm and bright, trusting, and Kurt’s heart dropped to his stomach, complicated with fondness and desperation and annoyance all at once.

There were tons of fix-it fics after Blame It On the Alcohol, and while they were all lovely, this one takes the cake as my absolute fave — athough it probably falls more under the umbrella of a missing moment. Simply put, it’s about the night of Rachel’s party where Kurt, as memorably established in the episode, lets Blaine crash at his house, and between Blaine’s drunken ramblings and Kurt’s struggle to stay calm and composed, it toes the line between sweet and heartbreaking. The characterization of Blaine is particularly raw and strong. I got all misty-eyed.

you have that effect on me by skintightsocks
Kurt’s mostly trying to remember how to breathe after, wondering if Blaine cares how red Kurt’s ears must be, or how watery his eyes are, or how goofy his smile; wondering if Blaine knows how long his eyelashes look when the light hits them, too. Kurt can’t ever remember being this aware of his surroundings, of ever caring that much.

Did you feel personally victimized by a cockblocking piano? Have a glorious extension of the famous Original Song kissing. Like, I remember reading this the day after the episode aired and having all my needs satiated. Don’t get me wrong, the co-authors perfectly nailed the clumsy new territory of it all, plus the holy-shit-what-even-is-my-life explosion of emotion that comes with it, but damn, dudes know how to kiss.

just take my hand by skintightsocks
“Is this a date?” Kurt asks. Well. Fine. He squawks, but he doesn’t mean to.

Their first date! Short but cavity-inducing, flustered and bumbling boys abound, and a delicious undercurrent of sexual tension. What makes it especially fantastic is that both you and the boys know it’ll totally be resolved eventually, because they’re freshly-minted boyfriends, and while it’s a new thing, it really captures the way they organically fall into it without much between them changing.

born in a small town by sotto_voice
It’s a normal morning, except that Kurt has a whole lot more pep in his step than he typically does. He’s alternately humming and whistling, the first time Burt has heard him do either since the bird died last week, and Burt doesn’t have much of an eye for this kind of thing, but he’s pretty sure Kurt did his hair even more carefully than usual this morning.

Ugh, too precious. If you’ve ever wanted to see Burt’s reaction to Kurt and Blaine starting to date (a reaction we were tragically deprived of in canon!), this one’s for you.

just one of the girls by crackedaglet
“If all the guys are busy over at Kurt’s house, we can have Girls Night over at mine!”

So fluffy you might die. According to the writer, this falls somewhere between Born This Way and Prom Queen, and it focuses on Blaine’s first big foray (post-official boyfriend status) into interacting with non-Kurt members of New Directions — specifically the ladies. I love it to pieces because it’s so painfully true to high school parties; Rachel is adorably earnest and her budding friendship with Blaine made me teary, I cannot lie. Kurt and Blaine spend most of it separated at different parties, but there are nevertheless plenty of cute and flirty moments squeezed in.

the totally unwanted sleepover (that ended up being awesome)
Blaine carefully eyes between Finn and Kurt for a few moments before inhaling in realization. Finn kind of feels like a douche because he’s going to be the biggest cockblock ever – he does truly feel bad about that – but Burt can be the scariest person in the world and if Finn were to leave them alone and Burt were to find out? Both Kurt and Finn would be grounded until like, the end of summer and that would suck.

Like the excerpt clarifies, this fic is set during the summer prior to season three, so we can thankfully handwave Finn being civil to Blaine because this is pre-transfer and thus pre-unintentional threatening of Finn’s leadership position. Yay! Finn’s voice is scary amounts of true to the show’s (seriously, it’s like a Cory Monteith audiobook), and all of the dynamics at play are so endearing — you’ve got your Kurt/Blaine being old marrieds, Finn/Blaine being hilariously boyish, and brotherly bickering with Finn/Kurt, verging on both affectionate and irritated. You’ll probably finish it wishing something like it could happen in canon.

ties by flaming_muse
It was what a grown-up did; he chose his own clothes, decided how to express himself.

Blaine-centric, and very insightful, almost meta-esque. Spurned on by his new season three wardrobe, this is pretty much a breakdown of different ties Blaine has worn and the defining, chaptered moments each marks. It starts pre-Kurt (i.e. Sadie Hawkins and his enrollment at Dalton), but don’t worry, Kurt/Blaine becomes a prominent fixture halfway through. And they’re stunning and fierce as fuck, of course.

it’s raining on prom night by elanorelle
“Is there a reason you’re trying to make us have this conversation through the door?” Kurt sounded amused, or exasperated; possibly both, because they seemed to come hand in hand as a response to a lot of the things Blaine said and did. “Like, have I disturbed you in some kind of compromising position? ‘Cause, you know, if there’s something you like that you’re not comfortable telling me about then we should really—”

This centers around senior prom (not the junior prom of S2) and was written in July and therefore way before we found out Blaine is one grade below Kurt — pause for violins — but not even a retcon like that can stop me from desperately hoping canon!Kurt and Blaine take a note from this fic and skip prom in favour of cuddling and making out at home. True, fic!Blaine’s ass is grounded, so they kind of have no choice, but the banter between them is so funny and lovely. Your heart will melt all over the place.

how burt hummel was eventually won over by blaine anderson
He couldn’t help but notice that even though Kurt had only known this guy for a couple of months it was suddenly “Blaine this,” and “Blaine that”; long hours after school with the Warblers and then inviting Blaine out for coffee afterwards; pictures printed off the Internet like this guy was some kind of movie star.

Yet another Burt-perspective piece! This one is a lot more fleshed-out than the others I recommended, mostly because of its length. More words means more gradual progression, and for Burt, that literally begins from the moment he first sets eyes on the infamous picture in Kurt’s locker. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I think Burt Hummel is generally wonderful, so this was sometimes difficult for me to read; there were small instances where I thought he was too judgmental or reluctant, mainly because the Burt in my head would have come around a lot sooner if he knew Blaine was making his son happy, but hey, maybe I’d be singing a different tune if I were a parent. What do I know! Just, yeah, be forewarned that his approval of Blaine is a slow-burning process, though I found it very much worth the wait, in the end. It makes you sit and consider tons of characters, not just Burt; Blaine’s daddy issues are a fixture here, too, if you find that intriguing like I do.

the one wherein blaine and mike like cardigans by villagestories
Blaine makes a ridiculous wounded noise that Mike finds completely excessive for the current situation but whatever. He stares at Blaine and wonders how the hell he got to this very moment.

Comedic gold, man. Season three has given us flickers of Blaine and Mike: Total Bros, and if you’re craving more, this fic is your ticket. Some might call it cracky, but let’s be real, Blaine’s occasional tendency to be a bit of a flailing, ridiculous mess is not exactly something fandom invented. While the overall mood is absolutely lighthearted, Blaine being head-over-heels for Kurt and the lengths he’ll go to to enforce that is what grounds this fic from veering over into complete hysterics. Also: Mike Chang. End of.

finders, keepers by sotto_voice
“If we move here and you become the king of the hipsters, I’m breaking up with you.”

Encapsulates everything I love about the idea of Kurt and Blaine living in New York. Technically not future-fic — they’ve tagged along on Mr. Anderson’s business trip and are checking out potential housing arrangements for college, but it hits some inevitabilities, like Kurt’s individuality is a lot more attractive to NYC than it is to Lima, and how does Blaine feel about that, and how generally starry-eyed they are over city life, how much more rewarding it is experiencing all that together, etc. Fluff galore!

love (makes you do the crazy) by parsnips
Kurt is his friend. Definitely his friend. Probably his best friend, actually, which is weird, because he hadn’t realized he was missing one before Kurt came to Dalton. It’s just that Blaine doesn’t know what else Kurt might be. Maybe. In the future.

Okay, this one is tricky! The narrative starts after Silly Love Songs, which would be totally fine if it weren’t for the part where its ending kind of negates Original Song. It was finished before the latter was broadcast, see, so the way Blaine and Kurt get together isn’t the way Blaine and Kurt get together in canon. In other words, it’s half-AU, half-not, but you know what? I’d give it a shot just for how damn entertaining it is. Blaine’s voice drips with personality and humour, flawed and inappropriate and all kinds of endearing. It’s essentially a giant what-if scenario, really, and there’s no harm in enjoying that.

perfect in my mind by skintightsocks
He’s got exactly one button undone when Blaine sits up suddenly, almost knocking their foreheads together, and blurts out, “I’m a virgin!”

Like the last rec, canon has tossed this fic into the slightly-AU pile, seeing as it focuses on Kurt and Blaine losing their virginities to each other and The First Time is now a thing that exists! God bless. Nevertheless, I think of it as one of the classics, because it has so many great things going for it: the massive word count, the anticipation that builds as the boys keep pushing boundaries and growing more comfortable, the palpable sexual frustration, the meddling ensemble cast. It’s hot and fun and ultimately fulfilling.

while we two keep together by cimmerians
Kisses were different, now, in the wake of…of being together; different like being apart was different, like being alone together was different—there was so much more now, more to everything, every thought, every possibility, every moment.

Pitch-perfect, nuanced and cozy and humming with intimacy. Despite acknowledging what went down in 3x05 and including even more sex, I like that Kurt and Blaine don’t use it as a distraction, even though Blaine has some familial angst he obviously wants to escape from.

the problem with counting by flaming_muse
“Not that I don’t - I mean - You know I love you, and I think it’s pretty obvious that I think you’re really hot, so it’s not like I don’t want to, but it is totally fine if you don’t want to. Or we don’t want to, because it’s a decision for us both, right? But that’s not why I’m inviting you over. Not that we can’t, but I know you just stopped having to wear high collars to cover up the mark I left on your - Oh, god.”

Man, this is fantastic. Post-3x05, and it really captures the mental frenzy that sometimes happens after you first have sex with somebody. Blaine’s panic over whether or not he’s being too presumptuous is particularly adorable and relatable.

5 times kurt & blaine sleep together before they sleep together
Blaine doesn’t want to think about just how ridiculous he looks right now, but his back hurts from bending over his notes for so long, and the armrest of the couch he and Kurt are sharing is perfect to bend over backwards on and stretch his arms over his head until his face tingles and turns red and he starts to see spots from being halfway upside down for so long. With a groan, he sits back up, patting his undershirt down from where it’d ridden up his belly some, long untucked after hour three or so of cramming for midterms. He glances at Kurt, and Kurt quickly jerks his gaze back down, two telling points of color high on his cheeks.

Prepare yourself for criminal amounts of cute! I was in permanent *chinhands* mode throughout. The title tells no lies. This is a five-moments fic focusing on Kurt/Blaine cuddles, and each one is so effortlessly in tune with whatever stage their relationship is in at the time, which is quite a versatile feat to pull off in only 14k. The Blaine PoV is all sorts of hilarious — like, if you don’t laugh at least once, I will question whether or not you are human — and Kurt is the most adorable to ever. Fluffiness aside, though, this fic is also really wonderful at capturing the burgeoning hunger for sex and just the general need to be so much closer that is so completely compliant with The First Time. Simply delicious. Also, it gets bonus brownie points and all the gold stars for incorporating some new Blaine canon that has been either directly stated, spotted in background moments, or implied in S3: his boxing, his fencing, his absent parents, his fight club, etc.!

alternate universe
I actually haven’t read too many Kurt/Blaine AU fics, just because they’re one of those rare pairings where I’m pretty pleased with canon and don’t feel the need to. I’ve only got six, but if you have any you think I should definitely check out, let me know!

always here in the silence by cimmerians
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer.”

I was a bit skeptical going into this, because on the tin it says nerdy!Blaine/badass!Kurt, and to me, Blaine is already a big dork and Kurt is the epitome of badass. How could that be AU? My reservations were dashed, though, because this is very much not the Kurt and Blaine from canon. I mean, they aren’t so unrecognizable that they might as well be original characters, not at all — this fic plays around with a lot of their canon characterization, but twists it so that their insecurities and flaws manifest themselves in different ways. Instead of internalizing everything, Kurt snaps and stands up to his bullies long before he meets Blaine. It creates an interesting shift in power dynamics when they do meet, but they still have that magnetic pull between them that makes them want to band together and end their loneliness.

hogwarts AU by skintightsocks
“That’s why I kept telling you the potion wasn’t done. It’s been enhancing the things that people are most insecure about. How you did not notice that Finn was actually eight feet tall last week?”

“I don’t know, everyone looks tall to me,” Blaine says dismissively. Kurt buries his grin in Blaine’s shoulder, and then leans in and kisses at his neck for good measure.

Every fandom has to have a Hogwarts AU! I’ve linked you to the full tag for the verse, because while there are eight parts in total, the entries don’t link them together, presumably because they can be read as standalones. They’re all incredibly funny and cute (or smutty, depending on the rating); the sorting is interesting, there are clever substitutes for Potter canon (Suzy Pepper is their Moaning Myrtle! Brittany is obsessed with house elves!), and the cast is vast and colourful. Really, despite the drastic leap from reality, everybody feels very true to character and what makes them special canonically is somehow adapted to fit the wizarding world.

for all of the things we’re not by narceus
Kurt is safe and so is Blaine. Sometimes they still hang out in Kurt’s basement bedroom and listen to his mom’s old records and sing along to old musicals together, but Blaine’s not the world’s best liar, and that’s the kind of behavior that gets you the Santana Lopez treatment, so it’s not the best idea to do that as much anymore, either.

The very concept of this story renders me quite speechless. I can’t really go into the specifics of why without spoiling a lot of the twists and surprises for you, but here are some broad teasers: What if Kurt and Blaine had been like Brittany and Santana, friends with benefits who never talked about it? What if Santana had been like Kurt, out of the closet and relentlessly bullied? There are more clever and drastic reversals littered throughout, and the thing that makes them so chilling is that none of the characters’ personalities are altered too much to fit their new circumstances. You completely believe that in a parallel world, this is how things could have gone down, and it’s fascinating and compelling. I still have goosebumps.

you wear it well by whitings
Blaine’s always been so accepting, so accommodating of him, in a way Kurt can never really be of himself. Of Blaine, in return. He tugs the sleeves of his Letterman jacket down, covering his hands like a safety blanket. It’s the most precious thing he owns. It’s a mildly vulgar colour, and it makes his body look thicker than it is, and it’s so conventional it’s almost gross, but it’s his in. It’s saved him from the slushies, from the shoves, from hearing the talk, from worse.

Blaine’s wearing a black shirt and red jeans and a non-ironic bow tie, and he has his hair slicked back. He’s never worn a Letterman jacket in his life. Maybe that’s what Kurt sees in him. Blaine’s his steadfastly
normal anchor in a sea of crazy, and jocks, and cheerleaders, and hierarchical warring.

This is another chilling one that plays around with the idea of a Santana-esque Kurt Hummel, who instead of undergoing the growth and gradual freedom of expression he undergoes in canon decides to hide behind the image of a typical high school jock to get by. His relationship with Blaine is really heartbreakingly intimate, because Kurt is so scared of the intimacy, and yet wants it so badly.

for better or for worse by sotto_voice
“They’re eclectic, they can hit the Broadway standards for any starlets who decide to drunkenly serenade the grooms, they’re under orders to change their name, they’ll be incredible eye-candy once they’re cleaned up, and they have…something.” Kurt wags a hand. He isn’t at his most eloquent; it has been a long, long day of working with one particularly difficult bride while fielding intrusive phone calls from an even-more-difficult groom, and now he is at the point of the night where he sprawls limply across the heavenly-comfortable sofa in Mercedes’s tiny living room while she makes judgmental noises from the kitchen.

Something, huh?” she calls, knowing.

Kurt rolls his eyes. “Stop it. There’s star quality there; that’s all I’m saying.”

“Uh huh,” says Mercedes. “There’s also a keyboard player who’s cute as a button and wears bowties.”

Wedding planner!Kurt + wedding singer!Blaine, what more could you want?! Not all parts have been posted, and normally I wait for a larger word count to rec a work-in-progress (edit: the fic is now complete, woo!), but this is just too endearing to pass up. The characterization is flawlessly loyal to canon’s, although obviously with a few adult adjustments since they’re no longer teenagers, but my favourite thing about it is that it completely neglects the rom-com trope where the lively beautiful boy sweeps into the career-driven protagonist’s life and gives him or her a personality makeover. No, instead Kurt is already written as having all of these exuberant and playful qualities; it’s just that Blaine accentuates them a little more, and in a way that’s very sweet and down-to-earth rather than patronizing.

the oberlin AU by wordplayitout
“You’re in luck — your topic #2 matches pretty well with one of your classmates. Find Blaine Anderson and see if you can’t work out some kind of compromise.”

An AU where Kurt and Blaine meet at a private liberal arts college and are assigned to be partners for a cinematic studies project, and through queer-focused films they watch and analyze, they reveal to each other their own histories. The writing is so rich and intelligent, so much so that I actually felt a pang of longing for the harried life of a post-secondary student, just because Kurt and Blaine are so viscerally into it and into each other. Apparently there’s going to be an entire series of installments centered around this verse (yay!), so the link leads you to the overarching tag.

spectrum by ohmygodstopit
Blaine bit his bottom lip, smiling, “I’ll put it this way. I don’t think even you’d be disappointed by my cock.”

If you have difficulties navigating the layout of the kink meme, the author has started posting chapters on her journal! The one thing that makes this vastly AU is that Kurt and Blaine never got together in high school, Kurt’s crush fizzling out early on. The story picks up about a handful of years later where they both go to university in NYC, still considering themselves best friends; Kurt goes through a number of boyfriends, breaking up with all of them for the exact same reason — he’s something of a size queen. Kurt confides this in Blaine one drunken night, and the results are delicious and fraught with UST.

gen
My first fandom where I’ve actively hunted for gen fic, just because the show tends to introduce so many interesting character threads that never get explored on-screen. Luckily, we have tons of talented writers willing to do the work for them. ♥

leaving this behind was my first mistake by buffyx
Blaine thought about the summer of the Chevy, and all the times his father dragged him to the golf course and football games and the batting cages in the name of paternal bonding, and how he needled Blaine about joining a sports team, any sports team, and his mother hounding him about if he was going to ask any girls to Homecoming, and the looks on both their faces when he said he wasn’t interested—disappointed, but like Terrence, unsurprised.

A definite must-read if you consider yourself a Blaine stan. This is entirely pre-Kurt and pre-Dalton, but I’m including it because it’s a very thorough take on what broke Blaine, things only hinted at in canon — the implied disapproval of his parents (especially his father), the bullying, the strain of coming out, the Sadie Hawkins bashing, the gay friend who accompanied him. I doubt the show will ever give us flashbacks to that period, so if you’re looking for some head-canon, this is a great source. I wanted to snuggle Blaine for eternity by the time it was over, and the only thing that kept me from spiraling into a weepy funk was the minimalist intricacy of the writing and how clearly it illuminated that Blaine and Kurt went on parallel journeys, how brave they both were, too stubborn and hopeful to let themselves break entirely. Despite Kurt not being in it, it totally cements their strength as an eventual power couple.

thank you, mario, but our princess is in another castle by robotsfighting
“Kurt wants me to transfer to McKinley. And I want to go, too.”

I honestly had zero issues with Blaine’s canon reason for transferring — the things we do for love, and all that — but this fic offers fabulous insight into his mental process.

all the white horses by nthcoincident
And you are not your son—you are no one’s hero. You were never prepared for war.

I’m amazed at how profoundly this resonated with me — I mean, to the point of tears — because it’s literally written from the point of view of a character who has only been mentioned in passing: Blaine’s father. Mr. Anderson is characterized as a very passive-aggressive, reserved, borderline neglectful person, the harm being in what he doesn’t communicate, even though he’s aching inside. It’s a heartbreakingly beautiful portrait of Blaine, both young and old, and on the Kurt/Blaine front it really hammers home just how much Kurt’s individuality and free spirit helps Blaine come out of his carefully-crafted shell.

assorted
The rest of these are fics and ficlets that I enjoyed immensely, but because I enjoyed them all for pretty similar reasons, I would feel redundant writing said reasons over and over again. Most of them are quite short and succinct, light reading you could squeeze in before running off to work or school, and they’re all what I call slices-of-life: dates, kisses, sex, and a bunch of other coupley things that don’t require much plot.
